The glass unit. This is where most of your energy performance lives. Look for the specific Cardinal Low-E coating (more on this below), argon fill, warm-edge spacers, and dual-pane insulated glass units built to last. In Texas, the glass package matters more than any other single component.

Certified performance ratings. Every legitimate window carries an NFRC label with a U-Factor and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). For Plano, SHGC is the number that determines your summer electric bill. Lower is better. A window without published NFRC ratings is not worth discussing.

Choose fiberglass if you have oversized openings, want slim black frames with maximum glass, or plan to stay in the home 20 plus years and want the most dimensionally stable frame available. This is where the Pella Impervia earns its price.

What about wood and aluminum? Wood is beautiful and appropriate for certain historic or high-end architectural projects, but the maintenance burden in our climate is real. Standard aluminum conducts heat almost perfectly, which is exactly what you do not want in Plano. It is what most of these houses are trying to replace.

Why the Glass Package Matters More in Texas Than Anywhere Else

If you take one thing from this guide, take this: in Plano, you are not buying a frame with some glass in it. You are buying glass with a frame around it. Roughly 80 percent of a window’s surface is glass, and in a cooling-dominated climate, the coating on that glass is what makes a window energy efficient or not. One widely used high-performance glass is Cardinal Low-E, a microscopically thin metallic coating that reflects solar heat while letting visible light through. But “Low-E” is not one product. Cardinal Low-E 366 is the default. Three layers of silver blocking the large majority of solar heat while keeping glass that looks clear and bright from inside. For most walls on most Plano homes, 366 is the right answer and the one we quote first.

Cardinal Low-E 452 is the premium step up. A fourth silver layer that lowers solar heat gain below 366 and blocks the most UV of the three, while still keeping a bright, clear view. This is the coating for west-facing living rooms and big south-facing picture windows where you want to cut the heat without turning the glass gray.

Cardinal Low-E 340 rejects the most solar heat of the three, with the lowest SHGC on the chart. The tradeoff is honest: it is the darkest and lets in the least light, with a visible gray tint. It shines on the brutal west and southwest walls where you care more about killing the afternoon heat than about the view, and it is a genuinely useful tool that most salespeople never mention because it takes a conversation to place correctly.

One approach we often recommend is to mix these by elevation. We spec bright 366 across most of a house and step up only the hardest-hit west and southwest windows to 452 or 340, which costs less than upgrading the whole home and puts the performance exactly where the sun is. Other homeowners prefer the same glass on every window so the house reads consistent from every angle, and that is a completely valid choice too. Either is a good answer when it is a deliberate one. What matters is that a bidder walks you through both options rather than defaulting without asking.

One caveat worth stating plainly: not every window line offers every Low-E coating, and this matters when you compare brands. The Burris TectView AC carries the full Cardinal lineup, 366, 452, and 340. The Burris TectView EX carries 366 and 340 but not 452. Pella Impervia runs Pella’s own InsulShield Low-E system, which is comparable coating technology, just sold under Pella’s names and its own NFRC ratings rather than the Cardinal figures above. So you cannot translate an InsulShield package straight into a Cardinal number; instead, ask which InsulShield package you are being quoted and what its published SHGC and U-Factor are, then compare those numbers directly. If a specific coating matters to you, confirm it is available in the exact series you are quoted before you sign.

Beyond the coating is argon gas fill and a warm-edge spacer. Both are inexpensive, both measurably improve performance, and both should be standard on any window worth installing.

An Honest Comparison of the Major Window Brands

We install Burris, Pella, Lincoln, and WinDor. We do not install everything on this list, and we will give every brand its fair due. But one fact reframes the whole comparison, so we will say it up front: the high-performance Low-E glass that actually controls heat in a Texas summer is comparable across all of these brands. It is widely available, and a well-built Texas window carries the same caliber of glass as a window that costs several times more. So when a national brand quote comes in at three, four, or five times the price of a comparable local one, you are not paying for glass that performs better on your west wall. You are paying for the frame material, the name, and the sales operation overhead. Keep that in mind as you read down the list.

Once they see that the glass is the same and the price is not, most do.

Pella. A genuinely good manufacturer with a wide range, which means the series matters more than the brand. The Impervia fiberglass line is the reason we install Pella: a proprietary fiberglass that Pella’s own testing puts at many times the impact strength of Andersen’s Fibrex composite, remarkably stable in Texas heat, available in true black inside and out, and strong enough for large openings. That strength is a real, spec-sheet advantage, and it is where Impervia earns its price rather than borrowing it from a brand name. Pella’s entry vinyl, by contrast, is fine but not special. So when someone tells you they “got Pella windows,” the follow-up question is always which series, because Impervia and the base vinyl are not the same conversation.

Andersen. Sold through dealers and lumber yards, Andersen spans a wide range, from entry Fibrex windows up to genuinely beautiful wood and clad architectural lines. The higher-end Andersen product is legitimately nice. But we have seen Andersen quotes near six thousand dollars for a single window, and for a standard Plano home that premium buys you frame material and a name, not glass that controls Texas heat any better than a Texas-built window carrying the same caliber of Cardinal Low-E for a fraction of the price.

Renewal by Andersen. Worth understanding as its own thing, because it is not the same as buying an Andersen window from a dealer. Renewal is Andersen’s separate in-home replacement division: a single Fibrex composite product, sold through a polished, high-pressure sales presentation, priced at the very top of the DFW market, routinely three to five times the cost of a comparable-performing project. The part homeowners miss is that Renewal’s Fibrex is a mid-grade composite, not Andersen’s premium wood or clad architectural window, so you are paying the highest price in the market for a mid-tier product. And if a quote only makes sense before midnight tonight, that pressure is telling you something about the quote.

Marvin. Beautiful windows, and for a true custom architectural home or a historic renovation, sometimes the right call. But Marvin sits in the same premium price tier as Andersen, several times the cost of a comparable Texas-built window, and for a standard Plano production home you are paying for architectural capability your project does not need, wrapped around the same caliber of glass you can get for far less.

NT Window. Another Texas manufacturer, built in Fort Worth, and here is the part that matters: NT puts the same Cardinal glass packages in its windows that Burris does, including Low-E 366 and Quad 452. So on the glass that actually controls your Texas summer, NT is a genuine peer at a similar value price, not a downgrade. The one thing to watch is frame material. Some NT lines use a thermally improved aluminum frame, and for a Plano home you want the vinyl-framed option, since vinyl insulates where aluminum conducts, which is the whole reason these houses are getting new windows in the first place. Burris stays our first call because we build our installs around the TectView system and know it cold, but NT is a legitimate option we are glad to put on the table.

Milgard, Alside, and JELD-WEN. All three make windows that are fine at their price point, and all three are common in quotes from general contractors and roofing companies that added windows as a side line. Our hesitation is less about the products and more about what they signal: contractors who lead with these lines are usually competing on price, and price-first projects tend to cut the same corners on installation.

Pella Impervia is our recommendation when the project calls for fiberglass: slim black frames, oversized openings, or homeowners who want the most dimensionally stable frame on the market and are willing to invest for it. Impervia offers a wider color palette than the vinyl lines, White, Brown, Black, Tan, and Morning Sky Gray, and unlike the Burris vinyl it can be true black inside and out rather than black only on the exterior. Make every bidder write down the exact series and the exact glass package on every window, by name, then compare. A quote that names specifics like “Burris TectView AC with Low-E 452 on the west elevation and Low-E 366 on the other three sides” or “Burris TectView AC with Low-E 366 throughout” is a real quote. A quote that says “energy-efficient Low-E vinyl” is a placeholder.

Buying under deadline pressure. The 50 percent discount that expires tonight is not a discount. It is a pricing strategy built for people who do not get a second quote. A fair number is still fair next week.

How to Choose the Right Window Contractor in Plano

Ask about installation certification. Read reviews for the second half of the story. Anyone can collect five stars on install day. Look for reviews that mention service calls, follow-through after the sale, and how problems were handled. That is where companies show you who they are.
